South Central Scholars
Dr. James T. London, MD and his wife Patricia London co-founded South Central Scholars in 2001 to assist disadvantaged, highly motivated inner city high school students become prepared for and successful in college, graduate school and in life. Through education, mentorship and a jobs program, the students of South Central Scholars develop their full potential and become future leaders, both within the organization and in the broader community.
There are currently 1,100 students in South Central Scholars. Through its partnership with USC, South Central Scholars has a seven-week Summer Academy to prepare high school juniors and seniors for college. The Summer Academy is free to students and is taught by USC college professors and PhD teacher assistants. To date, South Central Scholars has distributed close to $4 million in scholarships, including those made possible though the LACMA Patient Care Foundation’s Los Angeles Healthcare Awards to support students in medical school.
