Dr. Richard Zapanta, MD
Eastside Orthopedic Medical Associates
Dr. Richard Zapanta exemplifies what it means to be a leader and recognized with this year’s Independent Physician Leadership Award for his contributions through active participation in professional organizations, dedicated service to patients and fostering of healthy communities.
Dr. Zapanta has founded and supported numerous scholarship programs raising millions of dollars to encourage Latino and other minority students to pursue their educations, including the USC – Latino Alumni Association.
He serves on the advisory board of the National Latino Medical Student Association, the board of directors of the National Hispanic Medical Association, and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, and is a founding member of the American Academy of Latino Orthopedic Surgeons.
Dr. Zapanta was born and raised in East Los Angeles. He graduated from Garfield High, East Los Angeles College and received his bachelors’ degree in psychology from the University of Southern California. He attended Haverford College in Philadelphia, participating for one year in a post baccalaureate fellowship program before graduating from the Keck School of Medicine of USC. He completed his post-graduate training at LAC+USC Medical Center.
Dr. Zapanta has been in private practice since 1979 and is a senior partner at Eastside Orthopedic Medical Associates and Plaza Surgical Center. He also has a passion for art and is a founding member of the Museum of Latin American Art and serves on the board of directors of the Vincent Price Art Museum.
